I was commissioned to do this piece by very good friends of mine. It took a while for me to contemplate the name for a while. This was the name of their newborn son, and they gave me no specific instructions for the image. I started to do research about the image of the Phoenix and definitely wanted to capture the great wingspan of this mythical creature. It's ethereal quality is very mysterious and appealing. They loved it, but I did change it to a white frame to match the nursery! The layered paper that I used for the wings is Japanese washi paper; my favorite!
