Bottlebrush Lei

We just did a show at Justin Herman Plaza for Hawaiian Airlines, sponsors of the Embarcadero Ice Skating Rink. It was a gorgeous November day; perfect for our marathon hula show! We performed from noon until 6pm! In preparation for the show, Kumu Kawika asked us to make 3 strands of bottlebrush lei that we would twist together to wear. This is one of faster lei that we have to make, and really doesn't take as many flowers as you would think!Bottlebush trees grow throughout San Francisco, and the blooms are fairly hearty and last for weeks at a time.
This is a close-up of a single strand.
We wear three strands twisted together. Byt the end of the day, all the sweat and heat caused the lei to look quite wilted. Luckily I wasn't dancing on Sunday as well, otherwise I would have to make another one!
